man and three women

Honestly, I don’t even know why I’m doing a Valentine’s show.

Last Christmas, I asked Santa for one very specific Valentine to be placed under my tree. I was very specific: “He should look dapper in a three-piece suit, complete with cufflinks (Mmm! I’m a sucker for cufflinks).

“He should be hand(s)y, look good in a tool belt (and nothing else, please) and love hiking – on me (because I just wouldn’t know what shoes to wear!). He should enjoy shopping, Broadway shows (at The Smith Center, of course) and beautiful, blingy, sparkly things. So maybe he’s a little gay, but he doesn’t act on it?”

Needless to say, I must be on the “naughty” list because there was no package under my tree.

But here I am, following through with a Valentine’s show anyway. Why? Well, my parents just celebrated their 35th anniversary, and they’re planning to come to the show. In an effort to get on Santa’s nice list (and since I always forget my parent’s anniversary), I’m dedicating this column to them.

My mom loves to tell the story of the night they fell in love. On their first date, they went out to dinner and a movie. My mom, ever so gracefully, somehow managed to drop an entire rack of ribs on her boobs.

The rack of ribs didn’t fall! They were supported by the “rack” of Mom! My dad, ever the charmer, was absolutely smitten. I guess he was just looking for a little “support.”

After dinner, they went to the movies. Things were a little awkward – as you can imagine – so my dad, being the suave romantic that he is, reached over and took my mom’s hand. But instead of kissing it, he stuck her finger up his nose. And, yep, you guessed it – she was hooked!

OK, maybe it’s not THE greatest love story of all time, but here we are, 35 years later, and my parents are still ridiculously in love. So, apparently, I’ve been asking Santa for all the wrong things. Turns out, all they needed was a little laughter and a whole lot of support.

Here’s to hoping my real Valentine arrives on Feb. 8 at my show, and here’s to celebrating 35 more years of their love – with just as much laughter, just as much support and maybe a few more racks of ribs.
