Another New Brewery Opening in SW Las Vegas
The long-awaited opening of Nevadan Brewing is just days away as I write this in mid-December. Situated within Sagos Tavern at 4790 S. Fort Apache just north of Tropicana and the 215 Beltway, a small 3.5-barrel system is in full view inside the restaurant and bar.
The brewery, which has been in planning since 2015, is co-branded Sagos Brewing / Nevadan Brewing and is a partnership with brewer Adam Cegavske and Sagos Tavern owner Jason Godfrey. The longtime friends were both born and raised in Las Vegas and have homebrewing experience and prepared well for operating a brewery.
Cegavske apprenticed at Explorer Brewing outside Portland, Ore., and locally at Big Dog’s Brewing and received training on brewing and the brewing business at Oregon State and UC Davis, while Godfrey earned craft brewing certifications through Cornell University.
Cegavske plans for his flagship beers to be Flippy Floppy, a 4.3% Mexican Lager so named because his preferred footwear is flip flops; NZNV, a 4.8% single hop Pale Ale brewed with New Zealand Nectaron hops; and Hazy NV, a 5.2% Hazy IPA in which more than a dozen experimental hops and hop oils were added.
Cegavske also plans to brew a Dry Stout with flaked coconut and will barrel age some of his brews. The tavern will initially pour four to six taps of the brewery’s beer, and the pub menu will be expanded to include food items made with Nevadan Brewing beers. You can show up at any time – Sagos is open 24/7.

CraftHaus Comrade Day
On Feb. 8, CraftHaus Brewery will host the 11th Annual Comrade Day, its yearly celebration of the unveiling of its Russian Imperial Stout and several of its variants at the brewery in Henderson. This year there is a Hawaiian theme as one of the tasting flights includes beers infused with Kona Coffee, macadamia nut, Hawaiian Sweet Roll, ube and coconut.
There will be three seatings, and the cost for general admission is $45 per person, which includes two hours seated at a table, tasting flight of four Comrade Imperial Stout variants, an 8 oz. pour of this year’s 11.2% Comrade Stout, a keeper logo glass and an opportunity to experience a “spiked” beer from a Bierstachelen.
Bierstachelen is a traditional German hot fire poker plunged into the beer, creating caramelization and a creamy frothy head. There are also several add-ons available, such as a prix-fixe meal pairing from local favorite Hapahaole’s Hawaiian Street Tacos food truck. More: EventBrite.com (search “CraftHaus Comrade Day”)

Local Brewery Champion of the Month
In this recurring feature, we spotlight establishments that appreciate our local breweries enough to devote their beer lists to beer made in Nevada. The newly opened North Italia at The District at Green Valley Ranch in Henderson features an upscale menu of Italian favorites with unique twists like Crispy Eggplant Parmesan with spicy vodka sauce, Black Mediterranean Mussels with Calabrese salami and Braised Short Rib Marsala with brussels sprouts and black truffle risotto.
Like its other 40+ locations, a section of the menu is dedicated to local brewery selections. At this new location, there are three local drafts – Able Baker Atomic Duck IPA, Beer Zombies Boomstick Blonde and Big Dog’s Dog Daze Hazy IPA – and three local beers in cans – Able Baker Mango Calutron Girl Wheat, Big Dog’s Las Vegas Lager and Las Vegas Brewing 1677 Stout.
